12G-SDI Equipment
Summary
Adding 12G-SDI capability to the lab addresses a critical gap: the lab demonstrates 2110 IP transport but has no hands-on experience with SDI, which remains the dominant physical layer in broadcast facilities. Industry consensus (confirmed via r/VIDEOENGINEERING discussions) is that facilities will be hybrid 12G-SDI and 2110 for the next 5-10 years. The person who understands both sides and can design the bridge between them is the strongest hire.
The lab’s approach uses external Blackmagic Micro Converters rather than PCIe DeckLink cards, because all three workstations have zero or one PCIe slots available. The Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G (90 used) converts camera HDMI to 12G-SDI at the source, and the 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G ($405) bridges that SDI signal into the 2110 network at the rack.
PCIe audit (2026-04-13): SERVER-PC has 1x PCIe x1 slot available (PCIE2). Stream-PC has 0 slots. Game-PC has 0 slots (once ConnectX-3 #2 is installed). The DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K ($215, fits x1) is an optional addition for native SDI output from SERVER-PC but is not required for the primary demo.
Timeline
- 2026-04-13: PCIe slot audit completed across all three workstations. Confirmed external converters as the only viable path.
- 2026-04-13: Blackmagic product line researched. Micro Converter BiDirect 12G + 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G selected as the buy plan.
- 2026-04-13: 12G chosen over 3G converter because Sony A6400 outputs 4K 30fps clean HDMI.
Current State
No SDI equipment purchased yet. Buy plan:
| Order | Item | New | Used | What It Does |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Micro Converter BiDirect SDI/HDMI 12G w/PSU | $199 | ~$90 | HDMI ↔ 12G-SDI conversion at camera |
| 2nd | BNC cables (3ft + 10ft, 75 ohm) | ~$20 | - | Physical SDI cabling |
| 3rd | 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G | $405 | ~$300 | SDI ↔ 2110 bridge at rack |
| 4th | DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K | $215 | ~$70 | Optional: native SDI out from SERVER-PC |
Total for items 1-3: ~624 new
PCIe Slot Map
SERVER-PC (ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming X):
| Slot | Type | Occupied By |
|---|---|---|
| PCIE1 | PCIe 4.0 x16 | RTX 2080 |
| PCIE2 | PCIe 4.0 x1 | AVAILABLE |
| PCIE3 | PCIe 4.0 x16 (x8) | GTX 1660 SUPER |
| PCIE4 | PCIe 4.0 x1 | Likely GPU-blocked |
| PCIE5 | PCIe 4.0 x16 (x4) | Mellanox ConnectX-3 |
Stream-PC (ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F): All 4 slots occupied (RTX 4060, Elgato HD60 Pro, RTL8127, Elgato 4K Pro). Potential future consolidation: replace both Elgatos with one Magewell Pro Capture Dual HDMI (x1, ~$300 used) to free a slot.
Game-PC (ASRock X670E Taichi): 2 slots, both occupied (RTX 3080 Ti, ConnectX-3 #2 future).
Key Decisions
- 2026-04-13: External converters over PCIe cards. No slots available across workstations. Micro Converters are also portable for future production use.
- 2026-04-13: 12G over 3G converter. 199 vs $85) but preserves A6400 4K output and makes a stronger interview demo (“UHD over 2110”).
- 2026-04-13: A5100 as dedicated 2110 test source. Clean HDMI, persistent battery power, spare camera not in active use. Earns its keep as always-on lab source rather than collecting dust.
- 2026-04-13: DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K is optional (step 4). The Micro Converter + camera HDMI achieves the same demo. DeckLink adds native SDI origination from Resolve/FFmpeg which is cleaner but not essential.
Experiments & Results
| Experiment | Status | Finding | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro Converter BiDirect 12G with A5100 HDMI | Future | Verify clean 1080p SDI output | Equipment research |
| Micro Converter BiDirect 12G with A6400 4K HDMI | Future | Verify 2160p30 passes through at native resolution | Equipment research |
| Full chain: camera → SDI → 2110 → healthmon | Future | End-to-end signal path validation | Equipment research |
| DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K in SERVER-PC PCIE2 x1 | Future | Verify physical fit and driver support | Equipment research |
Gotchas & Known Issues
- DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K is 6G-SDI, not 12G. Supports up to 2160p30, which matches A6400 output. True 12G (2160p60) requires DeckLink SDI 4K (1,095).
- PCIE2 on SERVER-PC may be physically blocked by the RTX 2080’s cooler. Need to verify clearance before purchasing DeckLink.
- Stream-PC Elgato consolidation (Magewell Dual HDMI) costs ~$300 to free one slot. Only worth it if that freed slot enables something high-value.
- HDMI Micro (Type D) connectors are fragile. The A5100 and A6400 both use them. SDI conversion at the camera means the fragile HDMI connection is short (6-inch pigtail) and the reliable BNC runs the distance.
Open Questions
- Is PCIE2 on SERVER-PC physically accessible under the RTX 2080 cooler?
- Does the Micro Converter BiDirect 12G pass 2160p30 from A6400 without downscaling?
- What BNC cable spec is appropriate? Belden 4694R (flexible 12G-rated) vs standard RG-6?
- Should future production gear purchases come from gig revenue or personal budget?
